Why AI Takes a Backseat in Star Wars
In this episode, Byron talks about AI and the lack of technology in Star Wars. For more on Artificial Intelligence: https://voicesinai.com https://gigaom.com https://byronreese.com https://ift.tt/31WftGA... Transcript: Many of the ideas that we have about artificial intelligence come to us from science fiction. Often times, it’s science fiction that shows us a world in which computers and technology have made the situation better for everyone. There’s an interesting exception in the universe of Star Wars. Star Wars is, arguably, the most successful science fiction franchise of all time, but technology plays a shockingly small role in it. The spacecraft in it, after all, still fly like they’re flying through air, banking and turning like that. The leading protagonists battle each other using swords, and the main speaking computer with artificial intelligence is nothing more than an annoying comic foil. Perhaps this is all actually fitting, because Star Wars isn’t set in the future. It is, of course, in a galaxy far far away and it was a long time ago. What strikes me as odd, when watching the movies, is the degree to which you could have a high tech future with hyper drives and all the rest, but evidently no artificial intelligence. But perhaps it’s a fundamental rule of drama that unless artificial intelligence is at the crux of the story line, it gets in the way of storytelling about humans. https://ift.tt/2R6jo0u gigaom November 29, 2019 at 04:12PM
